Schadenfroh - Gesundheit !

by David Raffin

Humor, like all great inventions was discovered by accident.

The first time a man witnessed a disagreement in which he knew for sure he was not involved- humor was born.

Since that time there have been many advances and complications to the form.

The dramatic instance of the occasional wry wit banished for saying the wrong word in the desert or those flogged for giggling at a private joke while in the Temple at Delphi did not stop the progress of Humor. Indeed, such actions simply served to add fodder to the cannon of one rogue wit after another in an impressive wave across the face of the planet.

The formation of the first government in Egypt was a boon for humorists and spawned the first written occurrence of satire- a form wherein irony, sarcasm, and/or ridicule are used to expose, denounce, and/or deride the practitioners of vice and folly.

Many Egyptian hieroglyphs are advanced satires poking fun at the pointy heads of the ruling class (a feature brought about by excessive inbreeding) and their relationship to poor stewardship and megalomaniacal leanings. Others are simply crude back room party jokes, an older, but notable form.

The day man invented pomp and ceremony is still a satirical holiday in the more enlightened European countries (May 1; aka- the day the idols first became tarnished and needed a good buffing to remain in the public square). On this day, young and old still gather in the center of the cities to weigh public officials to ensure that they have not grown too fat at public expense (this is also the day small children are encouraged to throw cream pies at royalty).

It was the wise sage Zoroaster who first proposed the need to regularly bring shame and dishonor to those in positions of political and social power in order to ever strive toward public health and personal vigor.

This Art has been handed down through the ages, without elaborate ceremony and ritual, without the presence of exotic birds and fruit, and open to those who wish to practice this ancient but always throroughly modern form.
