I saw The Coen Brother’s film “A Serious Man” last night and was pleased when I saw that linguistics professor and standup comic Ari Hoptman had a part in the film. I have long enjoyed and promoted his album “Dang! The Schtick of Ari Hoptman.”

Here is some of his work:

Walt WhitmanAri Hoptman is not a professor. He is a Ph.D, but he is an instructor or a lecturer, not a professor. He is definitely a local oddity, a real celebrity in the Twin Cities, and I enjoyed seeing him in "A Serious Man", as it reminds me of the same character he has been playing ever since I have known him--a conflation of professors and characters he no doubt encountered at the University of Minnesota.
He is very midwestern-fringy, very cutting edge for the Midwest, but too derivative for a more sophisticated audience.
All I know is that Bernadette Peters is the love of his life. I have always wished that he would find a real girl to be obsessed with, but that is part of his "allure" I suppose.
His students LOVE him. He is very charming, very funny. He has a one-liner for every occasion.

"Not since radical physicist Benny Hill first postulated that time slowed down while being chased by bikini-clad women; however, from the vantage point of the viewer, time sped up, have the masses been witness to such a momentous spectacle."
