"SayWA" the sound of an adman's jaw moving

03/28/06 | by David Raffin [mail] | Categories: Musings

Ex-Red Beret (Boy Scout) Chardman has a beef with the new Washington State advertising motto, "SayWA."

Seems most of the WAliterati (people who live in Washington and are able to comprehend what they read) hate the $400,000 product of an ad agency's gonif infested slogan team.

It will never achieve the branding success of California's "WAjewtalkin'boutWillis?*" or Oregon's "Dy-No-Mite!" because "SayWA" has never been a sitcom catch phrase.
This is what all other states use as ad slogans;
Mississippi's "Did I Do That?" ; Idaho's "Danger, Will Robinson!" ; Texas' "EX-TER-MIN-ATE!" ; Florida's "Excuuuuuuuuse Meeeeeeeee!" All being powerful cases-in-point.

Still, were I in charge, I would also go against the grain- eschewing sitcom gold for the best slogan at this moment:
WA- "Singin' in the Rain. What a glorious feeling!"
This slogan is guaranteed to make the people happy again.
Also, it brings up two different images; Fred Astaire for the older folks, and Malcolm McDowall for the edgier crowd. Everyone wins.
I am willing to design this campaign for the bargain price of $350,000 (plus whatever it takes to clear the associated rights.)

* Sadly they stopped using this after complaints from the ADL, replacing it with "Nanoo, nanoo."

ChardmanI just got a fat envelope in the mail...
...C'mon Dave, give it a chance to bounce around in your head for a while before condemning it.
I mean- who wants to be known only as The Green River Killer state, anyway?
Just anti-freemarket, contrarian commies, that's who. I'm off to a wine-tasting, and later to a Starbuck Investor's meeting.

When was the last time you saw the word "gonif" used in print?
Too long, that's how long.

ChardmanMarketing lingo is strange indeed.

"Not since radical physicist Benny Hill first postulated that time slowed down while being chased by bikini-clad women; however, from the vantage point of the viewer, time sped up, have the masses been witness to such a momentous spectacle."
