Wavves

04/05/09 | by David Raffin [mail] | Categories: Reviews, music, Links

I have just discovered the low-fi band Wavves. I saw them in an interstitial on IFC.

Live, I found Wavves reminiscent of the late Lance Hahn, the voice and guitar. It also reminds of psychotic surf music and early eighties california punk rock.
Live, it turns out, Wavves have a cleaner sound than recorded. Recorded, Wavves are a wall of fuzz and distortion. The same sound, distorted. Noise. But, noise with more rich vocals.

Wavves is a project of Nathan Williams of San Diego. He maintains a weblog.

Several mp3s may be found online. Here find downloads of “California Goth” and “So Bored.”
Here listen to “Here’s to the Sun.”

"Not since radical physicist Benny Hill first postulated that time slowed down while being chased by bikini-clad women; however, from the vantage point of the viewer, time sped up, have the masses been witness to such a momentous spectacle."
